Ingredient in Shrimp Shells Could Cure Acne
Acne is probably the single-most dreaded skin ailment of teenagers. It is caused by several factors, most prominently by over-production of skin oil, plugging of skin pores and bacterial infection.
If you’ve ever suffered with acne and purchased any one of the numerous over-the-counter products designed to fight or diminish acne, you probably quickly came to the realization that most of these products are over-hyped and have little effect whatsoever on reducing or curing acne. In fact, you’re more likely to get the side effects of skin scale and dry skin than you are a cure for acne.
But good news for acne sufferers may be on the horizon. Recent news reports claim dermatologists from UCLA (i.e., University of California – Los Angeles) have made a remarkable discovery involving chitosan, which is a polysaccaride that is found in crustacean shells. Crustaceans like shrimp and crabs have shells that are high in chitosan content.
These doctors have discovered, almost remarkably, that chitosan has the ability to kill bacteria. The discovery was not what they were actually looking for or investigating. Instead, they were analyzing the ability for chitosan use as a carrier for antibiotics when they discovered it kills bacteria by itself, in short, no need for antibiotics to kill the bacteria associated with acne. Thus, using a form of biodegradable nanoparticles of chitosan as a carrier for antioxidants and collagen, they can produce creams used for treatment of acne. Now, if they can only find a way to mask that undesirable smell of shrimp teens will be smearing on their faces. Just kidding of course :o).
